Teen pop star Justin Bieber is more influential online than both Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama, according to recent statistics from social media aggregator Klout.
The San Francisco-based company has made the controversial claim after using their complex series of algorithms, which calculates an individual’s online influence using factors such as tweets, Facebook ‘likes’, pings, Google mentions and other forms of social media. The site calculates a person’s score out of 100, indicating how often what they have said is repeated by others online.
According to Klout, Justin Bieber has the maximum score of 100, with his tweets being retweeted five million times each on average. The American President Barack Obama earns a less impressive 88, with his tweets being repeated by others 250,000 times on average.
The website revealed their Top 20 most influential earlier this week, and the list was an interesting mixture of key political and intellectual figures side-by-side with pop royalty. Key names in the Top 20 included the Dalai Lama, Katy Perry and celebrity for celebrity’s sake Kim Kardashian.
In an interview with The Guardian this week, Klout founder Jose Fernandez discussed the sudden importance of his website, claiming that many top American political figures were looking to recruit his services to help understand how social media can be used to sway public opinion. Fernandez claimed that Klout was “the opposite of advertising”, declaring that: “For some things it's reaching the few that matter. If you say you like something, how many people and who does that affect? We are living in an attention economy. We have too much information coming at us. Who do we trust, whose links are we going to click?"
