Black Eyed Peas were not paid to headline this year's Super Bowl halftime show, it has been claimed. According to a report by Forbes, the band were not rewarded financially for the performance, after organisers claimed that the exposure itself was enough compensation.
The band performed at last night’s Super Bowl during the half time slot, where they were joined on stage by Usher and ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. They raced through a set of past hits, bringing out tunes such as ‘Where Is The Love?’ and Usher’s recent song ‘OMG’. Despite the fanfare, many have been quick to criticise their performance, accusing the group of being static on stage and condemning their use of auto-tune technology for a live performance.
Last year the game was watched by a record 106.5 million people, and early reports have indicated that this year’s audience may have been higher.
Philadelphia-based attorney Lori Landrew commented on the precedent for unpaid half time acts, claiming that it has been a regular procedure for recent Super Bowl performances. He said: "Historically, artists do not receive a performance fee for appearing in the Super Bowl halftime show. But their expenses, which can be sizable depending on the size of the act and their entourage, are covered.
"You can't underestimate the additional impact of all the promotion leading up to the game and the show. It's a great opportunity for an artist to get tremendous exposure, particularly with audiences that are not normally fans."
Black Eyed Peas joined the likes of The Who, Bruce Springsteen and Prince, who have all performed at the event in recent years.
