Elbow: Success of Last Album Was “Ridiculous”

Wednesday, 23 February 2011 Written by James Conlon

Elbow singer Guy Garvey has recently described the public response to the band’s last album, ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ as “Ridiculous”. After 19 years performing in small venues on the local music scene, Elbow’s 2008 album was treated with reverence by critics, earning the band the Mercury Music Prize, a BRIT Award and two Ivor Novello Awards.

Speaking to Gigwise.com, Garvey said: “It was ridiculous. There was a piece of good news every day for a year - that we’d won an award or that somebody famous loved our stuff or that somebody wanted to work with us.”

“There was good news every day for a year after 19 years of having barely any, so yeah, it was ridiculous. It was like, ‘God, it actually does happen still'.”

Garvey also spoke about how the band channelled their success into the recording of their upcoming LP ‘Build A Rocket Boys!’. He said: “Part of this record is still celebrating that if I’m honest, that’s another reason it’s retrospective because I’m very very proud of the lads,”

'Build A Rocket Boys!' is scheduled for UK release on March 7th. You can watch the band performing album track ‘Lippy Kids’ live below:
