Plan B Doesn’t Want To Play The Role Model

Friday, 04 March 2011 Written by James Conlon

Plan B has claimed this week that he doesn’t want to be seen as a role model for his younger fans. During a recent interview, the outspoken rapper claimed that it shouldn’t be up to popstars and musicians to preach to youngsters, but rather it should be the authority figures within their own communities.

With an incredible year of album sales and a top slot at this year’s popular V Festival, the singer is clearly reaching a widespread audience. However, speaking to a British newspaper, London-born Ben Drew said: “I’m a role model to people that can know me personally but I don’t think I’m a good role model for the kids who don’t and just read about me in the paper. How the hell could I be?”

“When we talk about certain political subjects, like why is the world the way it is? I’m going to say some pretty controversial things. If you sat in a room with me I’d be able to back them up.”

The rapper went on to discuss his own frank nature, saying: “If we were honest about drugs at school we would have more better educated kids about drugs, therefore they wouldn’t go near them. The best way to be a role model with kids is to be honest with them - that is the only way they can trust us.

“I’m this kinda person who thinks in a leftfield kinda way. Therefore publicly I’m the worst role model when what I’m saying is taken in soundbites as it seems explicit. If you are my little cousin or my mate’s son then I’m the best role model for you, but maybe publicly I’m not.”

Plan B is set to make a headline appearance at this year’s V Festival. The singer will be performing alongside Arctic Monkeys on both nights of the two-venue festival, which takes place from August 20th-21st this summer. Other acts on the impressive billing include The Script, Pendulum, Ellie Goulding and Dizzee Rascal.
