Bon Iver Discuss ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ Follow-Up

Wednesday, 23 March 2011 Written by James Conlon

There aren’t many artists in the world like Bon Iver at the moment. In the past four years Wisconsin-born Justin Vernon has gone from being an off-key charmer of the folk world to worldwide star. Vernon’s brightest collision with fame no doubt came early last year, when the singer was asked to perform six tracks on Kanye West’s widely-acclaimed ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’.

However, the songwriter is clearly looking to move quickly past the fame and back to the music, as he discussed his new album with Rolling Stone this week. Speaking about his return to the studio, Vernon said: “Somewhere along the line, I forgot how to write songs. I couldn’t do it anymore with a guitar. It wasn’t happening.”

He continued to talk about the help that he chose to recruit for his currently-untitled sophomore album, revealing that the record utilises the talents of saxophonist Colin Stetson (of Arcade Fire fame) and pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz. Speaking about his assistance on the new record, the singer said: “I brought in a lot of people to change my voice — not my singing voice, but my role as the author of this band, this project. I built the record myself, but I allowed those people to come in and change the scene.”

Vernon talked of a couple of completed tracks which feature on the 10-track release, starting with ‘Perth’, a track with marching drum beat, a children’s choir and wailing guitars. He describes the song as “a Civil War-sounding heavy metal song. It’s sort of chaotic, dense, jarring.”

He went on to describe the album closer, 'Beth/Rest.' Speaking about the horn-heavy track, he said: “I’m the most proud of that song. It’s definitely the part where you pick up your joint and re-light it.”
