The Strokes’ guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has spoken recently about the struggles he faced with drug rehabilitation as the band were recording their latest LP, ‘Angles’. The singer chose not to discuss the details of what specific drug abuse he was recovering from, but described the experience as “hardcore”.
Speaking to Spin Magazine, Hammond Jr. described his feelings during the recording process: "I wasn't on any chemicals. It was hard – you have two good years of post-acute withdrawal. I was nervous and couldn't remember things. It's like having a stroke, no pun intended. You always do the crazy rock star thing, of course, but I'd rather be left with music from someone I admire than their funny stories of all the fucked-up shit they did."
Guitarist Nick Valensi also stated: "We all saw something was broken – certain people getting into drugs. There was a lot of nodding off and passing out in the studio, like, 'Jesus, you're not awake to record your part, we have to wait four hours so you can nap'."
‘Angles’ is currently finding success in the UK, occupying the Number Three position in the album charts just behind Adele’s record-breaking run with ‘21’ and ‘19’. However, it would appear that the band weren’t always so optimistic about the LP, which they have confessed was recorded in disjointed and separated sessions.
Comparing the album to his solo material, singer Juliam Casablancas said:"I think almost everything I did on the solo thing felt so positive and almost everything I've ever done with The Strokes feels so negative and I just don't know why."
