2011’s Record Store Day has been confirmed as a roaring success with sales of physical singles bought from independent record stores soaring to more than double last year's total with album sales jumping by 20%.
Official Charts Company sales figures showed that the most popular vinyl for this years Record Store Day was ‘Medium Rare’, the Foo Fighters cover album, which was marginally ahead of Gorillaz ‘The Fall’ which had originally been released as a free download on Christmas day, proving that fans really do still love something ‘real’ to hold their music.
Queen and Radiohead both saw their singles sell well with the former's 7 inch re-issued version of ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ flying off the shelves.
Spencer Hickman, co-ordinator of Record Store Day 2011 said, "Record Store Day has been an overwhelming success. It seems to have struck a chord with artists, labels and music fans alike. It is now one of the most significant music events of the year."
Over 250 exclusive releases were made available by a whole host of bands for this year's Record Store Day which took place on April 16thand saw about 180 independent stores participate.
