A 57-year old mother from Sheffield, who bought tickets for her son and three friends to attend a Arctic Monkeys gig in Sheffield next month, has discovered she must also attend the concert as the credit card holder.
Avril Horton, from Sheffield, bought tickets earlier this year for her 16-year-old son Richard and his three friends to see the indie-rock band perform two gigs in their home city.
She had no intention of going to the concert herself. But Mrs Horton has since discovered that due to very strict restictions, introduced by the band's management to combat ticket resellers, the credit card she used to purchase the tickets must be presented by herself at the event for the boys to gain access, or none of the four tickets can be used. She now has to attend the gig in place of one of her son's disappointed friends.
Avril, who prefers the smooth jazz sounds of Canadian crooner Michael Buble over the rock musings of Arctic Monkeys, admitted she does not plan to stay long.
"I'm in my 50s - it's a waste of money and it's not my scene," she told the Sheffield Telegraph. "I'm going to go in and turn straight back out again, leaving the three in there. It's a joke."
"It's disgusting in a way. I think they are clamping down a bit too much. I knew it was card only and not cash but 16-year-olds haven't got credit cards, they're not old enough. When I got to the front of the queue the lady did say 'Your name will be on the tickets', but I just went 'Yeah, yeah'.
"I thought I'd accompany them, show my card and my ID and then they would get in."
Live Nation, which manages the box office for the Don Valley Stadium events, admitted that the anti-touting measures were 'not straightforward'.
"All customers were told the terms and conditions before they were sold the tickets. They had to agree to these terms before we sold them a ticket and when they booked they were then given a receipt which had these terms in writing," the Live Nation spokesman said.
"The person who books the tickets is the person who comes to the show. We don't want touts saying 'I'll meet you outside the gates, give you the tickets, show my card and then walk off'."
He added: "Some people lose credit cards and some have cards stolen, so there's going to be issues that are not straightforward."
The Artic Monkeys will play in a marquee tent at Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield next month.
