Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ Director Defends Controversial Content

Thursday, 09 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

The director of Rihanna’s latest music video ‘Man Down’ has defended his work against critics who claim that the promo depicts unacceptable material for general viewing. Director Anthony Mandler, who has previously worked on videos including Usher’s ‘OMG’, Jay-Z’s ‘Run This Town’ and Rihanna’s ‘California King Bed’, claims that he created the video with the intention of casting “a light on the very dark subject matter”.

The video, which depicts Rihanna shooting a male partner after being abused, has drawn criticism from a number of sources (including the Parents Television Council) for portraying murder in an acceptable light and showing an unnecessary abuse sequence which may be difficult for victims to witness.

Rihanna has personally gone on record to describe the video as “art with a message”, however director Anthony Mandler gave his own defence of the promo yesterday (June 8th) in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Speaking to the magazine, he said: "It's doing exactly what Rihanna and I hoped it would do, which is shine a light on the very dark subject matter.

Mandler continued: "The fact that there's an argument to ban this because this will make girls retaliate from abuse with murder is skipping over the point. We obviously have a huge issue to deal with as a country."
