Guitarist and founding member of The Stone Roses John Squire has denied claims that the band will reunite in the near future, stating that the group getting together again for the sake of money would be “tragic”.
Speaking to Shortlist magazine, the guitarist claimed that the only reason rumours continue to circulate about the band reuniting is that their fanbase now are old enough to “waste money on gigs”.
Talking about the prospect of a reunion, Squire said: "When it's just a get-together for a big payday and everyone gets their old clothes out, that seems tragic to me."
He continued: "I don't see these rumours as special or flattering. It's a symptom of the times. People who can afford to waste money on gigs now are of a certain age and The Stone Roses fit their brief."
Squire went on to state that despite media reports of the band being in financial talks about a comeback tour, negotiations have never gone as far as discussing money. When asked about a potential fee, he said: "It's never got that far. I hear rumours, but no-one ever phones me and says 'Will you do it for this amount?"
