The Stone Roses' bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield (pictured right) has died aged 63.

The musician's brother, Greg Mounfield, announced his passing "with the heaviest of hearts" in a post on social media. He wrote: "It is with the heaviest hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield. RIP RKID." He went on to say that Mani had been, “reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.”

Born in Crumpsall, Manchester, Mani joined The Stone Roses in 1987, helping shape the band's Madchester sound and playing on both of their albums, 1989's 'The Stone Roses' and 1994's 'Second Coming', before their split in 1996.

He later joined Primal Scream, performing on five of their records, from 1997's 'Vanishing Point' to 2008's 'Beautiful Future', before leaving the band in 2011 to join the Roses' reunion, which lasted until the band split for a second time in 2017.

Messages have flooded in from across the music and entertainment world, with Mani's bandmate Ian Brown leading the tributes on X.
