Olly Murs: “I Don’t Think My Music Would Work In The US”

Thursday, 09 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

Olly Murs has confessed that he doesn’t believe his music would appeal to American audiences. Speaking in a webchat with fans, the ‘X Factor’ runner-up claimed that he isn’t too concerned with trying to break the US market, preferring instead to stay focused on his UK fanbase.

The ‘Busy’ singer offered the insight during a webchat with fans on The Sun website. He said: "I'm very proud to be British and from the UK, and I wouldn't want to jeopardise that in any shape or form by going to the US. Of course, if you've got the right music then it would work in the US. I don't think my music would work in the US."

Murs continued: "Although, I have been told by the boys from JLS, that when they were over there they heard my album get plays in various supermarkets, shopping malls and things like that.
So it's great that the music is getting played over there, but I don't think that I will be making any sort of progress over in that market, because I want to do really well here in the UK."

The singer, who is also set to co-host the latter stages of ‘The Xtra Factor’ later this year, went on to claim that some artists make the mistake of trying to rush their careers and “falling apart” when they are unable to find American success.

He said: "I think that some artists get it wrong because they think that once they've had a little bit of success here, they try and hit the American market and it all falls apart. Then they try and come back to the UK and the UK fans get really upset that they've done that because it's like they've been betrayed in some sort of way. I wouldn't want to do that to my fans. I'd rather work really, really hard here."
