The Who’s Roger Daltrey: ‘Touring Made Me Seriously Ill’

Wednesday, 29 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

Roger Daltrey, frontman for iconic English rockers The Who, has claimed that he has faced real difficulties with his health while touring in recent years. The singer recently underwent a serious operation to remove a pre-cancerous growth, and told Rolling Stone that he struggled to come to terms with just how seriously the strains and stresses of touring affected his health.

Talking to the magazine, Daltrey said: "I was having terrible trouble hearing what I was singing and it did get to me. In fact, I've been suffering for quite a few of the previous tours. I never understood that if you sweat as much as I used to every night, you drain your body of salts."

He continued: "So I got very, very, seriously ill. I got to the stage where I was almost hospitalised with serious problems."

However, Daltry went on to claim that a new live system may help the band tour successfully in future without putting a strain on their health. He said: "I'm working with a completely new sound system. For the last year I've been able to hear myself onstage, and singing is so much easier. I don't over-sing anymore, which I used to suffer from terribly because I couldn't hear myself."

Daltrey went on to talk about his band mate Pete Townshend, who is said to be having problems with his hearing. The guitarist revealed late last year that he has been been a long-time sufferer of tinnitus.
