Laura Marling: “I Put My Stamp On ‘A Creature I Don’t Know’”

Saturday, 03 September 2011 Written by James Conlon

Laura Marling has stated that her upcoming third studio album ‘A Creature I Don’t Know’ is entirely her own intended sound, claiming that she stopped others from getting their “grubby mitts on it”.

Speaking to The Guardian this week, the folk songstress celebrated the fact that she had written and demoed all the material from her upcoming LP independently, claiming that the process had meant that she could ‘put her stamp’ on the album.

Marling continued to claim that her debut LP was very much the joint project of her and then-boyfriend Charlie Fink (of Noah and the Whale fame), while her second album ‘I Speak Because I Can’ was equally indebted to producer Ethan Johns.

Speaking to the paper about her work on ‘A Crature I Don’t Know’ (which is set for release on September 12th), Marling said: “It was quite an interesting way of doing it because it allowed to put my stamp on it before anybody else put their stamp on it. With the first two albums – Charlie produced 'Alas I Cannot Swim', and it's as much his album as it is mine, and with 'I Speak Because I Can', the style of the drumming and the bass playing is very much a representation of the characters who were playing on that album, and Ethan stepping in as well.”

She continued: “This time I thought: 'Well, I've got the confidence now, and I know what I want it to sound like, so before anybody else gets their grubby mitts on it, why don't I put my stamp on it?”
