New Cardiff University GH2 Venue Hopes To Fill Gap Of Recent Closures

Welsh media and events group Orchard have announced that they’ve worked with Cardiff’s Student Union to create the Great Hall 2, a new, more intimate version of the Great Hall designed to fill the gap left by the sudden closure of a handful of Cardiff venues.

The Great Hall is one of the most popular venues in Cardiff, and holds up to 1,500 people. While there is a fair amount of larger venues in the Welsh capital, smaller and more intimate clubs have been facing touch financial times – some of which have failed to survive, including The Point, which closed last year, and the Millennium Music Hall, which is facing a steep uphill struggle to get its feet back on the ground.

So Orchard’s Indie Promoter of the Year Greg Burton took it upon himself and his team to get a new 500 capacity venue in the ‘Diff.

“I’ve been working with Cardiff Uni SU since the summer to get this project off the ground, and now it’s getting established on the touring circuit with a number of gigs booked there in the coming months,” Burton explained. “Cardiff badly needs a venue of this size after the recent club closures in the city, so this will hopefully come as welcome news for Wales’ live music scene.”

The Student Union’s assistant events manager Greg Sheppard agreed with Burton, and said: “As a result of our conversations with Greg we reconfigured the existing Great Hall for a number of shows, moving the stage from one wall to another and sectioning off a proportion of the floor space making the venue much more intimate and suitable for shows expecting sales circa 500.

“The new venue has exceeded all our expectations; the new setting looks superb and the response from both promoter and customer has been overwhelming.”

In the coming future, the GH2 will see Dimmu Borgir, Every Time I Die, Chimaira and Your Demise all rocking out on different days. Every Time I Die fans can check out their tour dates below.
