Monday, 12 December 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

Post-punk pioneer Mark Stewart has revealed the track listing and release date of his new solo album ‘The Politics of Envy’. The album is due out on 26th March 2012 and will feature contributions from Primal Scream, Massive Attack’s Daddy G, Jesus and Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart and dub/reggae legend Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.

‘The Politics of Envy’ also hears Mark collaborating with cult filmmaker Kenneth Anger, Youth, Kahn, Factory Floor, Keith Levene (the original guitarist for The Clash and a founding member of John Lydon’s Public Image Limited) and punk legends Tessa Pollitt (The Slits), Gina Birch (The Raincoats) and Richard Hell.

Speaking about the new album, Mark said: “The whole thing grew out of some art thing I was trying to do with Kenneth Anger, some kind of avatar. It’s passing it on, but also paying homage. Anger’s spirit kind of hangs over the whole thing.”

Mark Stewart co-founded Bristol-based post-punk band The Pop Group in the late 70s. The band are widely considered to be one of the groups that influenced the later Bristol sound that is heard in genres such as trip-hop and drum’n’bass. The band reformed last year for several live performances and also announced plans to record a new album. Mark Stewart has been cited as a major influence by the likes of Nick Cave, Alec Empire, Bobby Gillespie, Trent Reznor and Tricky.
