Lily Allen Claims Adele Speech Interruption Was 'Metaphor For The Industry's Attitude To Women'

Pop singer-songwriter Lily Allen has hit out at BRIT Award chiefs who asked for Adele’s speech to be cut off – suggesting that the decision was sexist and a ‘metaphor for the industry's attitude to women’.

Allen, who’s currently on an indefinite hiatus, took to Twitter following the ceremony, which saw Adele pick up two awards, to make her feelings known. She claimed to not be surprised by the decision to cut her speech short – because she thinks the music industry is biased against women.

“I'd rather hear Adele’s acceptance speech,” Allen wrote. “That was a joke. I can't say I'm surprised. It was like the music industry's attitude to women played out as a metaphor.”

Allen then jokingly tweeted the show’s host for the night, James Corden, saying ‘HOW COULD YOU?’ – which, as you’d expect, drew a number of responses defending the Gavin and Stacey star.

BRIT Award and ITV bigwigs have since apologised for cutting the speech short to allow Blur to kick off their closing set, after there was a huge number of complaints from stars and viewers alike.

A statement from the ITV read: “The Brits is a live event. Unfortunately the programme was over running and we had to move on. We would like to apologise to Adele for the interruption,” while an apology from the BRIT Awards said: “We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short this evening due to the live show over-running. We don't want this to undermine her incredible achievement in winning our night's biggest award. It tops off what's been an incredible year for her.”
