Peter Hook Rubbishes Claims That 'Aerial' Is An Unreleased Joy Division Track

Peter Hook, former bassist of both Joy Division and New Order, has stated that ‘Aerial’, the track which was supposedly an unreleased track from Joy Division’s huge debut album ‘Unknown Pleasures’, is actually a ‘bloody awful hoax’.

The previously unheard song surfaced online earlier in the week, and came with a note that suggesting it was an unreleased track from one of Joy Division’s most famous albums. But Hook has now rubbished the claims – and added that he thinks the track may be a hoax by some ‘college kids’ who have attempted ‘capture the band’s atmosphere’. You can hear the track below.

“I've heard it. It's a hoax and it's bloody awful,” Hook told NME. “hey're quite clever, these guys, they sound like college kids to me, they've captured the atmosphere quite well, but it's a hoax. If Ian Curtis ever sang lyrics like that, I'd have kicked him up the arse.

“Everytime you hear about tapes being discovered, you think there may be more songs, but I think I can safely say that there isn’t anything more to do with Joy Division to come out. There's not much left over, when you're young, you don't think for tomorrow.”

Hook did add, however, that he had recently received a tape full of outtakes from the album’s recordings – and it contains some drastically different versions of tracks that you’ll remember from the 1979 record.

“I've got a tape that's recently come into my possession, which is outtakes from 'Closer'. It's interesting because the songs are quite different, we changed the songs quite a bit in the studio and the songs are very different. I'm not planning to do anything with it at the moment.”

New Order are currently on tour – though it is without Peter Hook, who thinks that the band shouldn’t have reformed without him. If you’re a fan of New Order, check out the dates and details of the shows below.
