Two Men Charged With Theft of Michael Jackson Catalogue

Following on from yesterday’s story, two Leicester men were arrested and charged with the online theft of 50,000 files from Sony Music – including the entire Michael Jackson back-catalogue.

James Marks, 26 and James McCormick, 25, were taken to Leicester Crown Court on Friday, and charged with the theft of the files under the Computer Misuse Act and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act – though the pair both deny the charges.

Among the 50,000 stolen files is a package which includes previously un-released material from albums such as ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’, as well as rare duets with singers like late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am. Sony have yet to make their views on the incident known but a source told The Sunday Times that ‘everything’ the company had purchased ‘was compromised’.

“Everything Sony purchased from the Michael Jackson estate was compromised,” the paper reported. “It caused them to check their systems and they found the breach. There was a degree of sophistication. Sony identified the weakness and plugged the gap.”
