Six members of feminist Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot were arrested over the weekend after they staged a protest against the notoriously powerful Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin – and could face up to seven years in prison.
The band consists of a team of around 10 musical performers and 15 workers who shoot the groups videos and handle the technical side of things, and are famous for their usually-feminist related protests where they perform in balaclavas and skimpy dresses.
But most recently, they protested the election win of Vladimir Putin – who claims to have won the vote ‘cleanly and legitimately’ despite massive calls of fraud and corruption among the Russian government by his political rivals and the public.
The arrests came after the band staged a random appearance at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow on February 21st – where they sang a track called ‘Holy Shit’ in protest of the Orthodox Church’s support of Putin.
A statement from the ‘Interior Ministry’ reads: “These citizens were taken in on suspicion of committing a crime, one involving a gross violation of public order, including inciting religious hatred as part of a planned conspiracy.”
