Marilyn Manson Reveals 'Born Villain' Inspiration

Industrial rocker Marilyn Manson has opened up about his new album 'Born Villain' and what inspired the new record – referencing his constant media controversy as a major factor.

Manson is no stranger to a controversial news headline and has been accused of causing all kinds of misbehaviour in children who listen to his music, most famously the Columbine Massacre of 1999. Now, Manson's channelled the constant barrage of media hate into the production of his new album – and he thinks it's paid off.

Speaking to NME, Manson said: “'Born Villain' is the perfect title for this record because it's who I am. It's a question of nature or nurture, are people raised to be villains or vilified like I have become? When it comes to things like Columbine, it would have been different if they [Harris and Klebold] had actually liked my music, but I think that I have had more blame accredited to me then any person in the history of music. There should be some sort of Grammy for that.

“I just wanted to make an album that I would like to listen to and not make an album like the past two records. Not because I don't like the first past two records, but because in particular 'Eat Me, Drink Me' was me being personal for the first time and 'The High End Of Low' was a very sad record. They were necessary to have them for me, I had to write them, or I might not be here. I'm not a suicidal person, but I could have crumbled.”

He continued: “I now feel like I'm in control of my life, before I was unhappy and when someone is unhappy, it's because they're not in control of their life. I'm not a masochist. I'm simply into trying to enjoy what I do, because otherwise there's no point.”
