'Unwanted' White Stripes Record Fetches $12,700

A rare piece of White Stripes vinyl managed to sell for $12700 today - despite it being branded as the record ‘no-one wanted’.

The super-rare 7” (there was only ever 15 made with artwork prepared by Jack White and Italy Records owner David Buick) was the band’s second ever single, featured the tracks ‘Lafayette Blues’ and ‘Sugar Never Tasted So Good’.

After being created in 1998, White then took the small collection records to a White Stripes show in the Gold Dollar, Detroit, where he attempted to sell them for $6 a piece. For some unbeknown reason (perhaps a variation in artwork), #1 out of 15 seemed to go unwanted by the crowd, who were allegedly waiting for the chance to buy #10. Now, that same unwanted copy has sold for almost $13000.

Speaking of selling the single, White said: “I remember me and Ben were talking, Aw that's too much! No-one's gonna buy it at the Gold Dollar for six dollars. Hahaha! Then we went in to sell them and you can't pick! You had to buy the first one, and there was a ton of people standing around waiting for someone to buy the first one, because they didn't want the first one. They wanted the tenth one.”

Interestingly, two other copies from the collection have also been sold in the past - one for $2700 in 2004, and one for a massive $18000 in 2010. You can check out the original eBay listing for the record here.
