Stereoboard Preview Festival No. 6

It is not at all uncommon for new festivals to make their mark on the summer event circuit, and stealing in at the end of the 2012 summer to stake its claim will be the debut of the unique Festival No. 6. Taking place in the incomparably gorgeous surroundings of Portmeirion in the Welsh countryside, this unique concept festival has amassed an intriguing array of artists to perform in its first year.

ImageHeadlining over the course of the weekend on Stage No. 6 will be three legendary acts. Friday night will see psychedelic rockers Spiritualized close out the day following performances from acts including Sheffield’s finest troubadour Richard Hawley and sometime SBTRKT vocalist Jessie Ware. Saturday night, meanwhile, shall feature a typically incendiary performance by Primal Scream at the head of the bill, with fellow dance rockers Death in Vegas and The Whip promising to make fine support. Finally, on a day partially curated by BBC Radio 6 Music (who will also be broadcasting live from the festival), Sunday will feature New Order closing the festival with the help of Everything Everything, Gruff Rhys, Field Music and Stereoboard faves The Invisible.

Further down the line-up there are even more reasons to get excited. The i Stage will be headlined by Zulu Winter, Kindness and Clock Opera on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. Also appearing will be the likes of Palma Violets, Summer Camp and The Wave Pictures. The idyllic sounding Estuary Stage will be curated by Caught by the River and Faber Social, and is set to feature three days of the most intriguing music and literature. British Sea Power, King Creosote, Toy and Stealing Sheep being amongst the most notable musical names set to make appearances. Perhaps most striking of all amongst the musical bill is the appearance of the Gruff powered Welsh Rare Beat ‘Disc a Dawn’ Stage on Friday, which will feature Welsh language performances from the Super Furry Animals frontman alongside other Welsh bands such as Y Niwl and Cate le Bon.

Alongside the musical attractions, Festival No. 6 is set to feature a vast array of art and culture. The Central Piazza will see special spoken word appearances by the likes of acclaimed actress Maxine Peake, Fast Show man Simon Day and Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess. Fans of Portmeirion filmed TV series “The Prisoner” will also be excited to learn that the stage will feature re-enactments of famous scenes from the show. Comedy will be provided by famous names such as Andrew Maxwell, Marcus Brigstocke and Phil Jupitus, whilst The Sonic Cinema will include BFI-associated screenings of films about The Libertines, The Chemical Brothers and The Beastie Boys.

Finally, for those wishing to keep the music going throughout as much as the weekend as humanly possible, DJs across a variety of locations include Francois K., Andrew Weatherall, Mr. Scruff and Sean Canty (half of incredible dark ambient duo Demdike Stare). The weekend will also feature the very best in food and drink (from oysters and champagne to a fine selection of real ale), a variety of activities for children and four intimate pop-up raves in the heart of Portmeirion’s woodland areas.

There is too much going on at No. 6 to adequately summarise in this article, so why not head over to the festival website for more information? www.festivalnumber6.com is the place to go.
