Chart-topping boyband JLS have been confirmed as the first act to headline Leeds’ brand new arena, which is currently being constructed and is set for a September 2013 opening.
Set for a performance in December 2013, the group are the first artist to receive confirmation for the venue, though they won't be the first to perform – as there'll be an opening programme taking place in September.
Leeds City Council Leader Keith Wakefield is happy with the announcement, and has said: “It’s excellent news that such a popular act have chosen to include our world-standard Leeds Arena as part of their tour. Plans are well under way to put together a packed programme for our opening fortnight in September and it’s marvellous that we can look forward to performances from quality acts such as JLS already in the arena’s schedules in the months after that.”
The Leeds Arena is set to host 140 concerts and events - ranging from gigs, to boxing, to darts, to dancing on ice and more - every year, and has a 13,500 person capacity. Described as ‘fan-shaped’, and takes over from Queens Hall (demolished in 1989) as the city’s major venue.
