Sir Paul McCartney To Replace Kurt Cobain In 'Nirvana' Reunion Tonight

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has reportedly been confirmed to replace iconic grunge star Kurt Cobain for a one-night-only Nirvana reunion, which will feature the only surviving members of the band - Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

ImageThe decision may come as a shock or a surprise to Nirvana fans, who would have expected a more hardcore and gravelly-voiced figure to front a Nirvana reunion, but the world-famous singer and musician will perform alongside them at Hurricane Sandy charity concert 121212 tonight, in a New York gig that also features The Rolling Stones.

If you’re a Nirvana fan and are confused - and maybe even a little pissed off - at McCartney being chosen for the role, get this - he was invited to come and jam by Grohl a while ago, and went to a studio to play with the Foo Fighters star and Novoselic (as well as Pat Smear, the unofficial fourth member of the Nirvana) earlier this year.

Despite ripping through some tracks and getting to grips with working with the trio, Macca was unaware as to who the band actually were. He said: “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ ‘And somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

McCartney will be performing a brand new track alongside Grohl and Novoselic at tonight’s show, and they’ve secretly been in the studio for a little while - meaning we may just see some new ‘Nirvana’ material hitting shelves in the near future, though nothing has been said as of yet.

What do you think of the news - is Macca a good replacement, or isn’t he fit to fill Kurt’s shoes? Would you like to see some new music and more performances? Let us know your opinion in the comments section below.
