Trent Reznor: 'Computers Make It Easy To Make Lazy Music'

American rockstar and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has hit out at electronically produced music, describing it as ‘lazy’.

Speaking via another one of his Reddit AMAs (‘ask me anything’) sessions, he also claimed that today’s music seems to be more about ‘fashion than substance’.

“I don't really care if you can play an instrument or not,” he told the Redditors. “I don't think that's a mandatory skill required to make music that can connect with people. I do think computers have made it easy to make lazy music that sounds nice.”

He continued: “I find a fair amount of what's championed today feels to me like it falls in that category - much more fashion than substance. There's also a lot of current music I think is great… The Knife is a good example.”

He went on to talk about his band Nine Inch Nails - which has just witnessed a massive line-up rehaul.

”Regarding NIN, what's interesting to me about reassembling it is trying some new things out with a different type of lineup,”Reznor explained. “We're not deep into NIN rehearsals yet, but the idea is exciting.”

What do you think of Reznor’s comments - do you agree that computer-aided music production can be lazy? Let us know your opinion in the comment box below.
