Paramore's Hayley Williams: 'I Don't Need To Write Lyrics About Sex Or Drugs'

Paramore star Hayley Williams has claimed that she ‘doesn’t need’ to write about taboo subjects like sex or drugs - and instead likes to pen lyrics about ‘normal life problems’.
Although admitting that she may earn some older fans if she were to swear and write about ‘sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll’, Williams has stated that that’s not her style - and that she doesn’t try to seem ‘cool’.
I don't really feel like I need to say anything about sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll,” Williams told NPR. “I don't need to swear. And I'm not saying that I'm a perfect angel, but I think it would feel very disingenuous - like, 'This is me trying to be cool. Maybe we'll grab a couple older fans if I just put this swear word in'. I want to talk about normal life problems.”
Williams also talked about being labelled as ‘emo’ and writing ‘emotional’ songs - something which is usually seen as a derogatory term by bands like My Chemical Romance.
“Emo really stands for emotion. When someone calls Paramore emo, I take it as a compliment. I don't think there's anything wrong with writing songs that are emotional.”
Paramore’s latest self-titled album hit shelves today, marking their return to music following the departure of Zac and Josh Farro.
