Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has revealed how he was once told that he’d never make it in music - because he was ‘too chubby’ and ‘too ginger’.
The 22-year-old star - who’s even see his profile explode over in America in the past year - is currently putting together his sophomore record, the follow-up to his six times platinum 2011 debut ‘+’. But, while he’s been one of the best British artists to emerge this side of 2010, Sheeran has told of how he was shot down by record labels earlier in his career - as his image was ‘unmarketable’.
Speaking via a video for SBTV and NCS about self-belief, Sheeran explained:
“Every single label I had gone to at the time had told me this song wasn't a hit this song wouldn't work and the fact that I was slightly chubby and ginger wasn’t a good 'marketing tool' for them. So yeah it did definitely feel like it wasn't going to happen.
“The way I maintained self-belief is that I knew I wasn't good at anything else so what else was I going to do and secondly with the whole look and songs that the labels rejected I knew it was really important you stay true to yourself. Being an individual makes you stand out from the crowd.”
