Rob Sparx Releases 'Babylonian' EP

Tuesday, 09 July 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Leicester-based producer Rob Sparx has dropped his latest release, the ‘Babylonian’ EP, via his own Migration Records imprint.

Sparx is a veteran in the scene, and is one of the most multi-talented producers you’ll find in the game right now. He’s been making beats and creating treats since the late 90s, earning his first release in 2004. He’s made drum and bass, dubstep, and everything else electronic and 4x4 in his time, and though his latest EP is a strictly 140bpm(ish) dubbysteppy affair, it’s still as eclectic as you’d expect from him.

The EP kicks off with his own unique take on Symbiz Sounds’ Dubplate, featuring Singin’ Gold. Sparx has given the track a metaphorical kick up the arse, combining the dancehall flavours and reggae style vocals with his trademark bassweight - this VIP is a breath of fresh air, or perhaps a breath of fresh ganja smoke.

Taking a step away from the borderline-brostep LFO wobs, Look sees Sparx crafting a seriously bassy head-nodder - its eight-bit synths suggest he may have been rinsing out some old Joker tunes when he was throwing this one together. It’s similar in style to Prayer for Life, a moody beat with wicked shuffles and fills thrown in for good measure.

EP closer Fall of Babylon was produced by the Dubstitutes, and is probably our personal favourite - it mashes together classic Croydon low-frequency terror with Rastafari samples, tearing percussion, and even some proper dub sounds for good measure.
