In what is probably the most unexpected transfer of the football pre-season, One Direction's Louis Tomlinson has signed with Doncaster Rovers Football Club on a non-contract basis.
The deal will mean that Tomlinson gets the number 28 shirt at the club, while still being a member of record-breaking boyband One Direction. The club and supporters hope that Tomlinson, who is a lifelong Rovers fan, will play for the first team at some point in the coming season, helping to raise money for Bluebell Wood, a Yorkshire children's hospice.
Speaking about the suprise deal, Tomlinson said: "This has always been a childhood dream for me. I feel very honoured to have been asked to sign for Rovers and being able to help both the club and the amazing charity Bluebell Wood is what it’s all about."
John Ryan, the Doncaster chairman who used to wear the number 28 shirt, revealed he is "honoured" to have Louis Tomlinson at the club: "I am honoured to let Louis play in my number to help raise money for the charity. I wore this in 2003 for my record beating appearance at Hereford and this is the first time I have allowed it to be used since, but I felt this was a good cause."
Tomlinson played for the Championship side last year in pre-season friendly at the club's home, Keapmoat Stadium. With One Direction currently on tour in the US, Louis admitted he may not get the chance to appear for the club until later in the year.
One Direction have announced the first two legs of a worldwide stadium tour for 2014 – including eight sold out dates in the UK and Ireland.
