Return To The Weird And Wonderful Boomtown Fair

Friday, 09 August 2013 Written by Adam Holden

The maddest town in the UK is once again welcoming visitors for what will be the maddest weekend of the year. With new districts and new attractions, tourists will be flocking in, while the regular citizens get ready for another bout of artistic wizardry, creative innovation and of course, a lot of skanking. We are of course talking about Boomtown Fair.

Located just outside Winchester, the festival is arguably the most beautifully bizarre in the UK and will take place between August 9-11. Bars, saloons, cocktail joints, casinos, hotels, town halls and restaurants fill the natural bowl, creating a one-off environment for revellers keen to sample a broad spectrum of music.

Boomtown Fair boasts the best in ska, dubstep, electro, techno, punk, hip hop, reggae and rhythm and blues. The the likes of Gentleman’s Dub Club, Trojan Sound System and veteran DJs David Rodigan and Lee Scratch Perry will all perform sets throughout the weekend, while Mad Caddies, Ozomatli and Bad Manners are also down to grace the site’s many main stages.

Arguably the festival’s biggest attraction is the Arcadia Spectacular’s gigantic sound-system spider. The stage, if one can even call it a stage, is a mind-boggling construction already seen wowing fans at Glastonbury.

Also new for 2013, and a great addition to the site, will be the new 300ft magic carpet ride, which will transport citizens of Boomtown up and down the aptly named ‘hippie highway’, taking fans to parts of the town they may have never seen before. A toll will be enforced for this pleasure, but with the town centre and Mayfair Avenue being uprooted and moved to the top of the highway, this may prove highly advantageous.

It's going to be weird, it's going to be wonderful. Let the music begin.
