Arcade Fire Reveal Life-Changing Experiences Influenced New Album 'Reflektor'

Wednesday, 09 October 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Canadian indie-rockers Arcade Fire have opened up about their hugely-anticipated fourth studio album ‘Reflektor’, revealing that it was inspired by a “life-changing” trip to Haiti.

The record - which hits shelves on October 28 - is looking to be one of the biggest of the year, and is their first album of new music since 2010’s ‘The Suburbs’. It’s also been one of the most cryptic collections of recent times (it was promoted with a massive guerilla graffiti campaign), and not too much is known about it.

But now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, the band have revealed some of the themes and inspirations behind the new LP, and it seems cultures from countries across the world have influenced it.

The band embarked on a “life-changing” journey to earthquake-ravaged Haiti, visiting hospitals and performing a gig in a remote village before heading to the annual carnival in Port-au-Prince. Speaking of the carnival, the band said:

“There's people dressed up as slaves with chains and black motor oil all over their faces. There's big fire-breathing dragons that shoot real fire at the crowd, and everyone is trying to hide. Wearing a mask and dancing, I felt less of a break between the spirit and the body. It really makes you feel like a hack being in a rock band.”

Lead singer Win Butler continued to talk about their travels to Jamaica and New York, and how all of their international adventures affected them.

“I'm really excited to hear what the band sounds like in a year, after we've got a bunch of touring under our belt. We were really changed by those experiences in Haiti and Jamaica. I was like, 'Oh, shit, we could be really good. We could get good at this music thing.”

Meanwhile, the band recently unveiled a star-studded short concert film previewing a number of tracks from the record. You can check it out below - keep your eyes peeled on Stereoboard for more exciting Arcade Fire news in the coming weeks!
