Event Rater Shortlisted For The Event Technology Awards 2013

Friday, 25 October 2013 Written by Jon Stickler

Event Rater Ltd, a startup company based in Llandaff, Cardiff, has been shortlisted as one of ten companies competing for the ‘Best New Event Technology Startup’ award at the Event Technology Awards 2013. The judging panel, lead by Jon Bentley former host of Channel 5’s The Gadget Show, were tasked with shortlisting ten companies from an initial list of 28.

The Event Rater website was launched in Beta stage in April 2012 by 24-year old Jonathan Fry. Local Cardiff venues, The Motorpoint Arena, The Glee Club and St David’s Hall have successfully trialled the website. Jonathan, who is currently studying an MPhil research degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University focusing on event evaluation, initially thought of the concept of Event Rater whilst studying at UWIC for his BA Hons degree in Events Management in 2010.

Event Rater gathers ratings (scored out of 10) and feedback from event attendees which allows venue management and event organisers to evaluate events/venues. This enables them to identify areas for improvement as well as appreciate the areas they are managing effectively. The website also allows venue management and event organisers to tailor the feedback specifically to their own needs by selecting from a bank of rating criteria. ‘Raters’ obtain a code at the event via flyers or posters in order to provide feedback which also ensures the validity and reliability of data. The feedback is anonymous, only for the use of venue management and/or event organisers.

The next stage in the company’s development will be the completion of the Event Rater app which is due to be launched in Cardiff in early 2014. The app is designed to be more engaging and to deliver incentives for consumers to rate their experience.

The potential of Event Rater as a start-up business has already been widely recognised as it was recently nominated by Cardiff Metropolitan University in the post-graduate category of the Santander Entrepreneurship Awards 2013. Event Rater was also a runner-up in a Dragons’ Den style competition organised by Menter a Busnes at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2012, winning a £1,000 prize. In addition to this, Event Rater has been awarded Digital Development Funding (DDF) from the Welsh Government towards developing the app.

The Event Technology Awards will be held at the Supernova in London on November 15 2013. The online public vote to decide the overall winner is open until October 30.
