Lou Reed Dies Aged 71

Sunday, 27 October 2013 Written by Jon Stickler

Hugely influential singer, songwriter and guitarist Lou Reed has died aged 71, Rolling Stone reports. The cause of his death has not yet been revealed.

The legendary Lewis Allen "Lou" Reed was mostly recognised for his work as singer, songwriter and guitarist with Velvet Underground, whose hits included Sister Ray, Sweet Jane, Rock and Roll, Venus in Furs and All Tomorrow's Parties. Reed also went on to forge a successful solo career after departing the group in 1970.

Although the cause of his death is yet to be released, earlier this year Reed received a life-saving liver transplant after suffering chronic liver failure. During a career that spanned more than five decades, Reed was always open about his alcohol and drug addictions, often using his experiences to influence his deeply personal songwriting.
