Yearbook - Old Bones

Thursday, 20 March 2014 Written by Gemma-Louise Johnson

Despite forming only three years back, 2014 could be the year for this lot, and not just for the sake of a convenient play on words.

This Hampshire quartet’s sophomore EP is crammed with aggressive, alternative punk that at times recalls Brand New, but with a little of the minimalism of Foals thrown in for good measure.

Old Bones probes deeper into the inner psyche of Yearbook compared to their 2012 debut, ‘All Squares and Circles’, casting stresses and strains into the spotlight. Andy Halloway’s arresting English-accented drawl nestles perfectly within their angular guitars and sharper edges.

The title track taps into the mainstream with some big hooks, while We Are Strangers ensures the same, adding a couple of lurching riffs to cater for the alternative end of the spectrum. Elsewhere, trippy time signatures and melodic flourishes take centre stage on Time Management.

This six-track collection is a confident leap forward for a band that could soon make some major inroads into your life. “I am Napoleon, I am changing the rules”, Halloway sings on Classic Literature. This is a whole new tale for Yearbook - don’t miss it.
