The Glassguns - The Ugly Truth

Friday, 20 September 2013 Written by Gemma-Louise Johnson

Having slogged their way through the foothills of ‘70s-infused hard rock since 2010, the Glassguns paint the perfect picture of sex, drugs and a whole lot of high voltage rock ‘n’ roll on their new EP ‘The Ugly Truth’.

The opener - Things - is a stand-out track, intensely listenable and catchy, with a nod towards Guns N Roses by way of its guitar solos, like a crotch-rocket ride to the edge of Slash City.

The title track is a balls-to-the-wall cause for head banging. Funky, groovy jams act as the calm before the storm amid the bat shittery of weighty, stoner riffs while Can’t Stand The Light is a burst of rock ‘n’ roll intent. A heavy, noisy riff collides with bluesy hooks and lyrics that will stimulate the lustiest of singalongs when out on the road.

While most bands have tried to modernise this rock revival into carbon-copy cockery, on Flare For The Fireworks vocalist Adam Burrows’ raw passion sounds as fresh as Budgie’s Burke Shelley a quarter of a century ago, combined with the modern day howl of Wade MacNeil. But, the band’s greatest strength lies with axe man Sam Farrelly, whose technical mastery is the driving force.

‘The Ugly Truth’ might not be a groundbreaking addition to the hard-rock-revival, but it’s certainly well-crafted and sits comfortably alongside the likes of Heaven’s Basement. With better still to come in the shape of their first full-length, watch this space as the Glassguns are about to set Britain’s underground well and truly alight.
