Lionsex - (Not) What You Need (Single Review)

Monday, 22 October 2012 Written by Gemma-Louise Johnson

Following on from the success of their debut album ‘Get It’, released last year via Universal Music, Milton Keynes glam-rockers Lionsex have returned with renewed intent. The first of the songs to be made available to the public are delivered in the form of double A-side single ‘(Not) What You Need’ featuring ‘S.O.S’. Though many may have doubted their ability to produce something compeer to last year’s debut ‘Get It’, they have sure enough silenced them by creating these refreshingly raunchy little numbers.

ImageA far more adventurous beast than last year’s ‘Get It’, ‘(Not) What You Need’ is an infectious romp that sees the Lion back on all fours, ready to pounce once again and kick gluteus maximus. Confident and sassy, frontman Jef Leppard unashamedly sets the record straight with his views regarding current parody acts such as Steel Panther, comically introducing tribute act “Briansex” and “Clef Leppard”, and taking components from other band’s songs such as Razorlight’s ‘Golden Touch’, this is Lionsex as we have never seen them before. JJ Lyons glides the song forward with his epic and punchy bluesy chords, while Davy Lyonz’ playing is tighter than ever and plentiful of his trademark-styled, low rumbling bass lines. ‘(Not) What You Need’ is far more frolicsome than the standard roaring pride of ‘Get It’ and definitely well created, with a cutting edge that departures with a one-way ticket to a whole new dirtier, sleazier, grittier, Lionsex sound.

Leppard’s trademark, baritone vocal again lends itself effortlessly on double A-side track ‘S.O.S’. Achingly vulnerable, he is a mesmerising presence throughout and it's somehow difficult to understand why he hasn't ventured off into this new, slower melodic territory before. This acoustic carnival of Cash-saluting riffs and Jyrki 69-vocal pastiches thrusts new influences joyously to the fore. A solo from JJ Lyons restores faith in the band’s traditional sound, while a shimmering haze of atmospheric ambience and irresistible hooks so enthrallingly well-stocked feeds a copious supply of fresh meat into the lion’s system, making this year’s new Lionsex album (‘Get Evolved’) so highly anticipated.

Having weathered the stormy tide of a turbulent year following the untimely departure of guitarist Jakk Vanity Spence, the subject matters pinned to ‘(Not) What You Need’, could be suggestive of the tale of their personal journey to where they are now. Nobody said it was gonna be easy, but nevertheless, the ambiguity of it all draws the listener into the enigmatic world of a band that after shedding enough blood, a lot of sweat and plenty of tears, they are still capable of putting out songs of such a high calibre.

‘(Not) What You Need’ is out now and available for purchase via iTunes and other online music outlets.
