Robert Smith: New Cure Album 'A Sore Point'

Monday, 31 March 2014 Written by Elliott Batte

Robert Smith, leader of the Cure, has admitted that their forthcoming album, '4:14 Scream', is a "sore point" among the current line up of the band.

The record, a companion piece to '4:13 Dream', was recorded by Smith and the group's previous incarnation, which featured guitarist Porl Thompson. Reeves Gabrels and Roger O'Donnell are now playing with the Cure, along with bassist Simon Gallup and drummer Jason Cooper.

In an interview with XFM following their marathon Royal Albert Hall shows in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust, Smith said:

“We're in a weird predicament in that I've finished singing and mixing an album that was made by a band that no longer exists. I'm not sure it happens that often. This band is trying to make an album with this lineup, and it's an album that I'm tempted to make, that's really different to anything else we've done.

“So trying to be convinced that I should release the second half of what is an effectively an album that came out in 2008, it's a bit of a sore point, really, to be honest, amongst this current lineup.”

Smith also confirmed that the record would likely arrive on Fiction Records, with whom the Cure released 11 studio albums between 1979 and 2000. He said:

"It seems like a nice way of squaring the circle. It's an album that is really different to anything else we've done. People who want to hear it will hear it and those that don't, don't. They'll just keep dancing to Close To Me and Love Cats."
