Hot Hot Hot: The Cure Underline Their Legendary Rep at Baking Cardiff Show

Friday, 26 June 2026 Written by James Palaczky

It’s hot. All day, Cardiff has been burning up in the mother of all heatwaves, but respite arrives in the form of The Cure’s headline set to kick off this summer’s Blackweir Live series. The calming serenity of songs such as Pictures of You and The Last Day of Summer offer more of a balm than a portable fan or a 99 ever could.

At times, the goth-rock legends’ set is poetry in motion. With a back catalogue spanning five decades, there’s a beautiful sort of euphoria to their set, the singalongs wedded to the feeling that Robert Smith put pen to paper specifically for you all those years ago.

By the time The Cure take to the stage, following triumphant opening sets by regular collaborators The Twilight Sad and Welsh favourites The Joy Formidable, the sunset is kissing the horizon. The audience rise to their feet and offer their adoration to a formidable band, who respond with typically enigmatic nonchalance.

Scattering classic radio hits among deeper cuts, their set is less an explosion than it is a slow burn. The intensity builds from track to track, the beauty of the lyrics and the delicacy of their playing putting the audience into a trance as they dance and sway.

Under the cover of darkness they return for a sturdy 10-song encore (more a second set we’d argue) packed with reminders as to why they’re not only one of the most influential bands of all time, but also one of the best live acts around. The initial calm of the aptly-titled Hot Hot Hot!!! makes way for chaos with clattering drums, funky grooves and psychedelic wah-wah solos, with a couple more classics in The Lovecats and Close To Me following in its wake.

The audience is in good form, singing Friday I’m In Love with the same gusto as they might the Welsh national anthem over the road before a Six Nations match. As the final chords of Boys Don’t Cry ring out, it’s fitting that some members of the audience don’t get the message.
