Indie/Pop: The Stereoboard Latitude Setlist

Tuesday, 15 July 2014 Written by Gavin Rees

Latitude returns this weekend with a bold line up and high hopes. The festival will take over Henham Park in Suffolk between July 17 and 20, folding the worlds of indie and pop together in a loving embrace while ensuring that a few thousand cultural quotas are filled for folks missing out on their Sunday supplements.

With Britpop royalty, take a bow Damon Albarn, overseeing things and a couple of shitkickers done good closing proceedings, hello the Black Keys, the bill will sate the appetite of anyone who likes their guitars jangly, melodies sun-kissed and activists to be called Billy Bragg. Here we take a look at a few standouts that we think you should devote your attention to. Shout out too to Two Door Cinema Club, who have been forced to cancel their headline slot due to illness.

The Afghan Whigs - Saturday, Obelisk Arena

Comebacks are a tricky business, unless you’re Greg Dulli and Afghan Whigs. Shorn of a key member and 16 years removed from their last record, ‘Do To The Beast’ was a remarkably assured, downright brilliant return. This set will follow a short run of UK shows on what will doubtless be a pretty rare visit, so don’t be stupis - be stood in front of the main stage on Saturday afternoon when one of modern rock’s true greats says hello.

Atomic Bomb! Who Is William Onyeabor? - Sunday, Obelisk Arena

One time only. This collaborative celebration of the mysterious Nigerian synth artist will feature contributions from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem, Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark, Sinkane, Scritti Politti and Mahotella Queens and marks only its second appearance on these shores. Damon Albarn has previously played with the band in the past. So, anyone fancy a wager?

Julia Holter - iArena, Sunday

Holter released her third album, ‘Loud City Song’, last year and it’s one of the most bewitching pop records of recent times. To call it pop might narrow the focus a little, but her ability to mould melodies within expansive soundscapes means that she’s as much a master of that particular art as she is a textural genius.

Augustines - BBC Radio 6 Music Stage, Sunday

Just an honest, hard-working rock band. But, songs from their recent self-titled album will sound just huge this weekend. Billy McCarthy has the boundless enthusiasm of all great festival frontmen and a voice that will propel their earthy melodies through the crowd at the 6 Music Stage. If you’re not a fan yet, we’d like to bet that you will be soon.

Latitude Festival Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows:

Thu July 17 2014 - SOUTHWOLD Henham Park
Sat July 19 2014 - SOUTHWOLD Henham Park
