VIDEO PREMIERE: Stags Get Lost In Camden For Just Like You

Wednesday, 16 July 2014 Written by Huw Baines

Stags aren’t afraid to mix things up. The London-based rock troupe have forged a sound that combines the riff-heavy world of ‘70s rock with the emotional heft of grunge, with Just Like You the latest single to emerge from the fire.

With band members hailing from England, Denmark and Italy there’s an international flavour to proceedings, with the song also providing a neat follow up to last year’s Stealing My Heart.

You can check out our exclusive premiere of the video below, while after the jump we catch up with frontman Chris Finney, guitarist Alessio Pesaresi and bassist Oisìn Walsh to discuss the writing process and putting together the clip. Just Like You is currently available as a free download from the band's Soundcloud.

There's definitely a gritty blues air about the track, particularly thanks to the guitars. How did that influence take shape?

Alessio Pesaresi: "I would be lying if I said I'm not deeply influenced by the blues, I think any decent guitarist has to be. It's the way I started playing music as a kid and still today I feel like it's where everything starts for me every time I pick the guitar up. Even though I was never trying to write a blues song with Just Like You, I'm glad you can hear that fundamental influence."

Chris, lyrically, where were you coming from?

Chris Finney: "It's a song which screams youth. It's shallow, manipulative and any attempts at lyrical complexities were ignored when writing it. Frustration was at the forefront of emotions and I wished for this to be displayed as simply as possible. It was something which I wrote during time I spent in America when I was pissed off. It made me laugh reading it the following morning as it was like an adverse projection of my feelings at the time."

Can you tell us a little about shooting the video - how do you feel it ties in?

Oisìn Walsh: "The video was directed and filmed by photographer/artist/director Edie Lawrence, who we met last year when she interviewed us after a gig we played in Camden. We all agreed that we did not want another cheesy music video with a hot girl crying and showing her boobs to the camera while Chris tries to chase her in a Lamborghini to win her back, and the band plays in the falling rain in the background.

"We decided to film a DIY style music video, getting all our friends down to Camden Town, where the video is set, and basically filming a night out. The video stars our very good friend, Mr Thomas French, as the main guy in action. The actual filming lasted from 1pm throughout the night ending up at Liverpool Street Station at 7am after a lot of shots and beer so it was pretty tiring.

"The video portrays a guy having a heavy solo night out as a result of being in a bad state of mind. I think the way that the video ties in with the song is the fact that this episode of taking out frustrations of self-inflicted alcohol harm and letting loose while playing music has happened to each member of the band in some form. As Chris mentioned “frustration was at the forefront”, and I believe that our star of the video is a frustrated man displaying this in the most simplistic way as possible…getting lost in Camden’s nightlife."
