PREMIERE: M-1 And Bonnot Hit Hard On Offense Defense

Wednesday, 25 March 2015 Written by Huw Baines

In their new video for Offense Defense, M-1 and Bonnot bind a call to action with the confrontational world of Gridiron.

The short film finds the duo suited up with the Bergamo Lions, pushing M-1’s biting, satirical lyrics over sharp, funk-inflected production from Bonnot.

“Ideologically, sports are a representation of war or battle between different sides or even opinions,” M-1, who rose to prominence with Dead Prez, said. “Battle tactics and strategies are determined in context to the historical fights in society. Our song basically implores one to choose a side, for in war there is no such thing as riding the fence.”

M-1 has never shied away from political discourse and now, 15 years on from the release of Dead Prez’s ‘Let’s Get Free’, he’s as forthright as ever as hip-hop reacts to events in Ferguson.

“It is a reflection of where we are as black, poor and oppressed people,” he said. “More people will come into political life and that's beautiful. It's just, where do we go from there? Do we use the wisdom of our veteran freedom fighters or do we commit huge errors that make our liberation still out of reach? My job is to never let the world forget that hip-hop is the tool of voiceless masses.”
