Girlpool - Powerplant (Album Review)

Monday, 22 May 2017 Written by Laura Johnson

Girlpool are in the business of harmonies.

On ‘Before The World Was Big’, their 2015 debut, they favoured stripped-back accompaniment in order to allow their often exuberant voices to take centre stage. ‘Powerplant’, though, finds Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad adding fresh textures to their musical backdrop, with the arrival of drummer Miles Wintner a notable talking point, and mellowing their vocals in the process.

That’s not to say that the duo are lacking the lustre that initially endeared us to them. Tucker and Tividad have managed to keep the sense of intimacy that drove their best work intact while navigating new waters. 123 is the perfect opener, picking up where their debut left off and easing us into more polished surroundings. It ricochets between the old and new; the commanding and the softly-spoken.

Corner Store, meanwhile, sees the duo go off on heavily-fuzzed guitar tangents, with the short, sweet High Rise instead turning to Tividad’s bass to drive it.

Kiss and Burn, with its subtle harmonies, is perhaps what you’d expect the Beach Boys to sound like if they were reimagined as two astute young women living in LA in 2017.

But it’s It Gets More Blue that truly steals the show. It’s the best example of Wintner’s positive influence, with his work enhancing the force behind Tucker and Tividad’s already propulsive melodies.

As a bonus, it also contains a couple of wonderfully droll lines. “You’ll build him a tower, he’ll burn you a bridge” runs one, with “the nihilist tells you that nothing is true, I said I faked global warming just to get close to you” another to stick with us.

‘Powerplant’ is a collection that contains individual charm across 12 songs while also working well as a cohesive piece. At times it radiates a haunting sense of serenity, while crucially it also preserves their brand of tongue-in-cheek humour.
