Dua Lipa is a dream signing for any major label. Songwriter, performer and model, she is a triple threat capable of sending ripples throughout the music industry.
On her self-titled debut, her powerful vocals, finessed looks and damn catchy lyrical constructs are instantaneously pop star perfect. Featuring collaborations with Miguel and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the record also has a level of prestige that’s rare in a newly signed, developing performer. But, in reality, that’s been the case for a while.
Her young career has already included working with writers like Stephen Kozmeniuk (Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj), Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey, FKA Twigs) and Nineteen85 (Drake) and one spin of ‘Dua Lipa’ quickly reveals how many hits she already has in the locker: Be The One, Hotter Than Hell, Lost In Your Light.
Her vocal delivery is crystal clear, while her voice feels feminine and is distinguishable by her distinctive ‘hell yeah’ attitude.
IDGAF is a profound demonstration of that approach in illustrating relatable moments of heartbreak from her past. She’s an honest songwriter with a candid ability to communicate with her audience and there's a sense of realism here that is hugely likeable.
Garden is a big ballad and the dramatic production illuminates just how intense and full Lipa’s voice can be, while No Goodbyes is a spine-chillingly beautiful piece of work. Its words are spoken with deep compassion and combined with minimal instrumentation so the focus lies only in the depth of her emotion.
This is an album designed to be experienced in an arena by everyone. There is no target audience. Lipa could fit perfectly as a vocalist on a house anthem, head up a Clean Bandit-style orchestra or record a soulful Amy Winehouse-inspired number. She is exciting on so many levels. Her debut album is a brilliant way to understand why that last relationship didn’t work out, to offer guidance and stimulate soul searching or maybe just act as a great choice for a road trip. Hear it and feel enriched.
