Charles Aznavour Dies Aged 94

Charles Aznavour has died.

The French crooner, a prolific writer with over a thousand songs and hundreds of albums to his name, was 94. The news was confirmed by the by the French Culture Ministry.

Born Shahnour Varinag Aznavourian in Paris in 1924 to Armenian parents, Aznavour also enjoyed a long acting career and appeared in films by notable directors of the French new wave including François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol.

Among Aznavour’s most famous works was the 1974 ballad She, which rose to the summit of the UK singles chart and was later covered by artists including Elvis Costello and Jeff Lynne. His most recent LP, ‘Encores’, was released in 2015, while he remained a notable concert draw throughout his career.
