Tuesday, 09 August 2022 Written by Laura Johnson

Olivia Newton-John has died aged 73.

According to a statement posted to her social media accounts, the British-Australian singer and actress, "passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California" on the morning of August 8.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 1990s, later recovered and then dedicated much of her time to advocating for further breast cancer research. Her cancer, however, returned in 2013 and again in 2017, when it was discovered it had spread to her back and bones, later progressing to Stage IV.

Well known for her role in the 1978 film Grease, Newton-John also had an extremely successful musical career, releasing five number one singles, two number one albums, winning four Grammy Awards, and receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 1981, among many other accolades.

Due to her humanitarian and charity work, the star also received an OBE in 1979, was made a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme in 1990, and in 1999 won both the Red Cross Humanitarian Award and Women's Guild of Cedar-Sinai Hospital Woman of the 21st Century Award for her charity work relating to breast cancer and the environment.

The full statement from her husband John Easterling can be found below:

"Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer.
