Ed Sheeran has shared a video for his new single, Old Phone.
The track was released earlier this month and will feature on the singer-songwriter's new album, 'Play', due out on September 12.
The song's accompanying clip, meanwhile, was directed by Emil Nava and begins with Sheeran explaining the inspiration behind the song, which came from finding an old phone, unused since 2015, which held messages from family and his late friend Jamal Edwards. He also revealed his idea of building the Old Phone Pub in Ipswich, Massachusetts.
"I was finding text messages from people that aren’t even here anymore, and reading conversations with people that I wish that I could have conversations with now," Sheeran said in the video. "So, I thought I’d build a pub somewhere and do a gig, but I put it out there to my fans and said ‘If you want to come to this gig, go on your old phone and find a message that means a lot to you, or a video that means a lot to you."
The documentary-style clip then continues to track the pub being built, alongside footage of Sheeran meeting fans, and looking at text messages and photos from an old phone. It culminates with Sheeran performing the song inside the pub.
Old Phone follows Sheeran's April single, Azizam, in previewing the follow-up to his 'Mathematics' run of albums (2011's '+', 2014's 'x', 2017's '÷', 2021's '=' and 2023's '-').
He'll play three shows at Portman Road, the home of Ipswich Town Football Club, in July, with special guests Myles Smith and Tori Kelly supporting on the first date, Busted and Dylan the second, and James Blunt and Maisie Peters the third.
He'll also resume his Mathematics World Tour this summer, with shows in Europe between May and September. Tickets are on sale now.
