Brian Wilson has died aged 82.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his family via his official social media accounts today:
We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world.
Born in Hawthorne, California on June 20, 1942, he began his music career in 1961 as the visionary force behind The Beach Boys, whose distinctive, surf-rock sound becaming a defining part of the 1960s musical landscape. Known for iconic hits such as Good Vibrations, God Only Knows and Wouldn’t It Be Nice, he penned more than twenty Top 40 singles for The Beach Boys, as well as the highly regarded 1966 album, ‘Pet Sounds’. He later went to forge his own career as a solo artist, releasing his self-titled debut solo record in the late 1980s. His most recent album, 'No Pier Pressure', arrived in 2015.
Over the years, Wilson’s contributions were recognised with countless accolades, including inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, truly cementing his status as a musical legend as his legacy lives on.
A cause of death has not yet been made public.
