Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea has laid out plans for his debut solo album.
Taking its name from a beloved family member, 'Honora' will arrive on March 27 via Nonesuch Records. The musician wrote and arranged the 10-track record, contributing vocals, bass and trumpet.
He was also joined by a host of collaborators, including saxophonist Josh Johnson, guitarist Jeff Parker, bassist Anna Butterss and drummer Deantoni Parks, who make up the Honora Band. There's also guest appearances by Thom Yorke and Nick Cave.
The album will include Flea's recent single A Plea, and his newly shared jazz-inspired track, Traffic Lights, which was co-written with Yorke and Johnson. It will also feature four other original songs, as well as new versions of tracks by George Clinton and Eddie Hazel, Jimmy Webb, Frank Ocean and Shea Taylor, and Ann Ronell.
"Deantoni and I played what became ‘Traffic Lights’ the first day," Flea explained. "Something about it reminded me of Atoms for Peace, so I sent it to Thom. Just knowing him, I thought it would be a rhythm and a sensibility that he would relate to. And I was right, he did.
"With a gorgeous melody and the words, you know, about living in the ‘upside down’ and how do you make sense of things when we’re getting all this fake shit and real shit? Everyone has their ways of dealing with the world. But he’s just the warmest, free flowing, jamming motherf*cker.”
Flea and the Honora Band will support the LP with live dates in North America, Europe and the UK this spring, including a performance at London's KOKO on May 26. Tickets for all dates go on general sale at 10am local time on January 23.
