Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea has released his debut solo single.
A Plea is a jazz-inspired spoken word track that runs for almost eight minutes, starting as an instrumental before the bassist delivers a powerful vocal midway through the song. It ends with a reflective spoken word section during which Flea shares his hopes for unity instead of division amid the current political unrest.
Flea plays bass, vocals and trumpet on the track, joined by double bassist Anna Butterss, guitarist Jeff Parker, drummer Deantoni Parks, percussionist Mauro Refosco, alto flautist Rickey Washington and trombonist Vikram Devasthali, with additional vocals by Chris Warren and the song's producer, Josh Johnson, who also plays alto sax.
It serves as the first preview of Flea's forthcoming, currently untitled debut solo album, which is expected next year via Nonesuch Records. In a statement, he shared that he wrote the song to urge listeners to, "build a bridge, shine a light, make something beautiful and see somebody, give it to somebody."
"I don’t care about the act of politics," he continued. "I think there is a much more transcendent place above it where there’s discourse to be had that can actually help humanity, and actually help us all to live harmoniously and productively in a way that’s healthy for the world. There’s a place where we meet, and it’s love."

Red Hot Chili Peppers released their latest album, 'Return Of The Dream Canteen', in October 2022, following 'Unlimited Love' that came out in April of that year.
